Phoenix Lander, sebuah pesawat robot dalam sebuah misi eksplorasi ruang angkasa di planet Mars dibawah Program Scout Mars, telah memulai misi pencarian air di planet Mars sejak akhir Mei 2008. Meskipun dengan upaya terbaik yang telah dilakukan oleh para ilmuwan NASA, robot bertenaga surya ini belum menemukan apa-apa melainkan es. Robot ini telah mengkonfirmasikan ke para ilmuwan NASA bahwa zat berwarna putih yang ditemukan saat menggali sebuah parit pada tanggal 15 juni adalah es cair. Earth makes two trips around the sun in about the same amount of time that Mars takes to make one trip. So sometimes the two planets are on opposite sides of the sun, very far apart, and other times, Earth catches up with its neighbor and passes relatively close to it.
